Future GalaxSea: Comprehensive modernization to start in 2026

The GalaxSea leisure pool in Winzerla is undergoing extensive modernization. The aim is to improve energy efficiency, increase the attractiveness of the pool in the long term and offer a unique experience for families in particular. Following the decision by the Supervisory Board of Stadtwerke Jena in December 2024 to renovate the GalaxSea with an investment of 22.5 million, the concrete timetable for the project has now been set: clever planning will ensure that the outdoor pool season is used optimally so that the GalaxSea will remain closed from summer 2026. The reopening is planned for the second half of 2027.
 

Extensive modernization for more sustainability and experience value 

The new GalaxSea is not only more energy-efficient, but also more exciting:  

• Energy efficiency: installation of a heat pump, a photovoltaic system and modern ventilation systems. In addition, the ventilation and water circuits are separated and the new slides are dimmed to optimize energy consumption.
• More experience: a redesigned water landscape with extended sunbathing areas, new slides and a reduction in the size of the water area in favor of a larger children's area.
• An outdoor pool that can be used all year round: The outdoor pool is enclosed so that it can be used regardless of the weather.
• Thematization: A completely new world of experience with a landscape-oriented design that combines optical, acoustic and visual highlights.

Timetable: Full-year opening in 2025 – closure one year from summer 2026

In order to implement the modernization efficiently, the GalaxSea will remain open without restrictions throughout 2025. The closure period will not begin until summer 2026 and will extend into the second half of 2027. This will allow the summer months to be used for outdoor pool operations while the leisure pool is modernized.  

Outlook: Initial details on theming in the first half of 2025

Concrete plans for the theming will be presented in the first half of 2025. Our aim is to create a leisure pool that sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency, sustainability and quality of experience for our guests, says Susan Zetzmann, Managing Director of the Jena-based company.
