Our district heating for Jena

JenaWärme - closer than you think

Contrary to what the name "long-distance heating" or "district heating" suggests - our environmentally friendly and convenient jenaWärme is produced right here in Jena, namely in the combined heat and power plant in Winzerla as well as in solar thermal and biogas plants. In this way, it's nearby, but, at the same time, far from your property. The heat - usually in the form of hot water - is piped directly to you via our district heating network. With the house service line of a building, the heat provided is transferred to the domestic system. There, you use the heat for heating and hot water. Afterwards, the cooled water flows through the closed circuit back to the power plant, where it is heated again.

Because our district heating in Jena is generated almost exclusively with the highly efficient method of combined heat and power generation and, moreover, renewable energy sources are utilised, a particularly low primary energy factor has been determined and confirmed.

Unsere JenaWärme in Zahlen

Here, you can find out more about district heating in Jena

For bringing district heating to the customers, a corresponding network is necessary. Anyone who has their property or house near the district heating network can, in principle, get district heating on request.

The Stadtwerke Energie relies primarily on energy produced by environmentally friendly and convenient combined heat and power (CHP) generation, mainly from the Jena gas and steam turbine combined heat and powerplant of our supplier. In order to drive two steam turbines with connected generators for power generation, the steam produced in the local waste heat boilers is used partly, while the steam from the conventionally operated steam generator is used in full.

District heating is, on the one hand, extracted directly from the waste heat boilers of the gas turbines and, on the other, by controlled extraction from the two steam turbines.

This heat is distributed in Jena by means of a pipeline system with a total length of approx. 226 km. We are constantly modernising the supply network and keeping it up to date with the latest technology. In this way, we guarantee almost 100 per cent security of supply.

We also operate combined heat and power plants (CHP). These plants work on a a "small scale" according to the same principle as large CHP plants, i. e. they generate electricity and heat at the same time. In this way, we can reliably supply whole districts with heat.

Jena's path to a climate-neutral district heating supply

In the future, when it comes to a comfortable and environmentally friendly heat supply, district heating will gain more and more importance - especially due to current developments and climate policy. Within the framework of the Climate Action Plan for the City of Jena and the heat transition, a specific transformation path towards a green district heating supply was developed. Gradually, the share of renewable energies in Jena's district heating is to increase significantly - from currently around 2 percent to probably around 91 percent in 2035. We aim for a completely climate-neutral district heating supply in 2040.

River thermal energy
covers most of the heat demand

The use of the river thermal energy of the river Saale is to become the centrepiece of green district heating in Jena. Thus, almost 50 % of the heat demand could be covered in a  climate-neutral way - always independent from the weather.

Geo-thermal energy
contributes to the base load

The local quaternary and red sandstone soils are suitable for heat generation using near-surface geothermal energy. Around 3 % of the heat demand could be covered in this way.

Power-to-Heat
supplements at peak load times

With power-to-heat, green district heating can be generated from green electricity - especially on sunny and windy days. Electrode boilers, which work like oversized immersion heaters, use the surplus electricity to generate hot water.

Hydrogen
replaces natural gas - at least partially

Gas-fired plants still contribute importantly to heat generation. For the time being, existing gas boilers will continue to be operated with natural gas but will gradually be converted to hydrogen by 2040.

Biogas
gains importance

The heat output of the biogas plant in Jena-Zwätzen, which already produces green electricity and green heat, is to be significantly expanded. In this way, biogas could contribute about 4 % to the heat demand in the future - about twice as much as before.

Solar thermal energy
is to make a greater contribution

Using the power of the sun and generating emission-free district heating - we want to significantly expand this option by 2040. For example, it is planned to use areas in the Saale meadows to instal elevated solar thermal modules.
