Tree felling in Naumburger Straße

In the course of the basic track construction work between Altenburger Straße and Stifterstraße, two maple trees in Naumburger Straße, near Christliches Gymnasium, will have to be felled this week (February 12 to 16, 2024).

Originally, only a reconstruction of the ballast bed and track was planned. However, at the beginning of the construction work, an asphalt layer, paving stones and an old, non-functional drainage system were discovered under the track ballast. Due to this unforeseen circumstance, the reconstruction had to be developed into a new track construction with a new drainage system.

Since some of the buildings on Naumburger Strasse are only 0.2 meters away from the existing track curb, these now have to be removed as part of the construction work. The reason for this is that excavation to a depth of 1.2 meters is required for the track foundation and the kerbs have to be replaced along the entire length. It is inevitable that a large root system will be encountered, which will have to be removed. This means that the stability of the trees is no longer guaranteed.

The tree felling will of course be carried out with the approval of the City of Jena's Environmental and Nature Conservation Department. Appropriate compensatory measures will also be taken.

The work is expected to start on Tuesday, February 13. Jenaer Nahverkehr asks residents for their understanding for possible disruptions during this time.
