Company History 

 

1958 until today

Since our establishment in March 1958 as „VEB Kommunale Wohnungsverwaltung Jena“ with 2,000 residential units at that time, a lot has happened. Not only regarding our apartments, but also with respect to the surrounding area and our services. We have been growing every year and are now the largest housing company in Thuringia with 14,400 apartments.

 

Our Milestones

2022 

  • 5th survey on customer satisfaction in Jena-Winzerla.
  • jenawohnen opens new customer centre together with the Stadtwerke Group at Saalstraße 8a.  
  • Demolition work for "neues Saaltor" has begun. Completion is planned for 2025. 
  • The high-rise building at Schützenhofstraße 91 is nominated for the German Bauherrenpreis (architecture award) in the area of refurbishment. 

2021

  • jenawohnen plans new housing and commercial building in Saalstraße 6-8 - Completion scheduled for 2015 
  • 5th survey on customer satisfaction in Jena-Lobeda
  • Termination of project "Ausbau des Multimedia-Netzes" (expansion of multimedia-network): between 2016 and 2021, the broadband cable network was changed to modern and sustainable technology in more than 12,000 apartments  
  • Awarded the Customer Crystal in the category "best new leasing process" at municipal housing companies by the international customer portal AktivBo
  • jenawohnen plans construction of 46 family friendly apartments in Hufelandweg, Jena-Nord, starting in 2022 

2020

  • jenawohnen plans to build 150 new flats in Theobald-Renner-Strasse, Lobeda-West, starting 2023 
  • Completion of modernisation of high-rise building at Schützenhofstraße 91
  • Completion of the new building project "Residential Centre for People with Dementia" and handover to AWO
  • Completion of the "K1" residential and commercial building in Kastanienstraße in Lobeda-Ost
  • Keeping an eye on climate protection goals: jenawohnen becomes a member of Initiative Wohnen 2050 (Housing 2050 Initiative)
  • Start of modernisation work "Smartes Quartier Jena-Lobeda" in Ziegesarstraße

 

2019

  • Completion of new construction project "Wohnen am Paradies" in Neugasse / Knebelstraße
  • Three tenants strengthen the advisory board of jenawohnen
  • Award for the "Schützenhof" residential quarter project with the Award Deutscher Wohnungsbau 2019 in the "Neighbourhood Development" category
  • Start of modernisation of high-rise building at Schützenhofstraße 91
  • Award for "jenaFREEstyle - unabashedly unrefurbished" with the Real Estate Marketing Award 2019 in the category Special Award 
  • 4th survey on customer satisfaction in Jena-City
  • "Smartes Quartier Jena-Lobeda" receives award in the federal competition "Stadt.Land.Digital" (City.Country.Digital)
  • Topping-out ceremony for the "K1" residential and commercial building in Kastanienstraße
  • Topping-out ceremony for the new building project "Wohnen am Paradies" in Neugasse / Knebelstraße

 

2018

  • Completion of the "Gas Grid Conversion" project: 3,500 flats converted from cooking gas to electricity from 2014 to 2018
  • Topping-out ceremony for new construction project of jenawohnen, "Residential Centre for People with Dementia" in Lobeda East
  • 4th customer satisfaction survey in Winzerla
  • Completion of the new building project "Schützenhofstraße" in Jena-Nord
  • Laying of the foundation stone for the residential and commercial building "K1" in Kastanienstraße in Lobeda-Ost
  • Topping-out ceremony for new hospice building in Lobeda
  • Award of the new building "Friedensberg-Terrassen" for the German Bauherrenpreis 2018

  • Ground-breaking ceremony and laying of the foundation stone for the new hospice building project for the Hospice and Palliative Foundation Jena
  • Groundbreaking ceremony for "Residential Centre for People with Dementia" in Lobeda East, the new construction project of jenawohnen,
  • Change of managing director: Tobias Wolfrum replaces Stefan Wosche-Graf
  • Nomination of "Friedensberg Terraces" for the German Bauherrenpreis 2018 (architecture award)
  • 4th survey on customer satisfaction in Lobeda
  • Topping-out ceremony for the new building project "Schützenhofstraße" in Jena-Nord

  • jenawohnen is planning a new commercial building in Kastanienstraße as a joint project with the university hospital
  • jenawohnen is planning a dementia centre at Salvador-Allende-Platz with the AWO (German welfare organisation)
  • Completion of apartment building at Paraschkenmühle in Jena-West
  • Completion of new construction project "himmelreich" in Händelweg, Jena-Zwätzen
  • Completion of the "Living with a view - Friedensberg Terraces" housing area
  • Completion of the "Immergrün" housing area - the garden quarter on Camburger Straße
  • Topping-out ceremony "Social housing - Naumburger Straße"
  • Start of construction of the housing estate in Schützenhofstraße
  • Dual management at jenawohnen - Tobias Wolfrum becomes managing director alongside Stefan Wosche-Graf
  • Laying of the foundation stone for the residential complex in Schützenhofstraße
  • jenawohnen plans to build an inpatient hospice in Lobeda-Ost together with the Hospice and Palliative Foundation.

2014

  • Demolition of the buildings at Am Rähmen 3/5 for the new construction of the residential quarter "Wohnquartier an der Tonnenmühle".
  • Completion of conversion work on "Haus Wettin" in Erfurter Strasse
  • Start of construction of "Immergrün" in Camburger Straße, Jena-Nord
  • 11th anniversary and inauguration after extensive renovations of the Service-Centers-Winzerla
  • The 10th anniversary of the Service-Centers-Stadtmitte is celebrated at the Saalstraßenfest (Festival in Saalstraße).

 

2013

  • 3rd survey on customer satisfaction in the urban area
  • Innovationspreis Zukunft Stadt 2013 (innovation award)
  • Nomination of our modernisation programme "wohnenplus" for the immobilienmanager.Award

 

2012

  • Occupation of our city villa at Botzstraße 4a after complete refurbishment
  • Completion and occupation of our multi-family passive house at Kunitzer Straße 12c
  • Architectural competition for the new residential quarter in Camburger Straße
  • Nomination of our social project "wohnschirm" for the immobilienmanager.Award
  • Pilot project for Thuringia: Pigeon house on a roof at Stauffenbergstraße 16 goes into operation
  • 3rd customer satisfaction survey in Winzerla
  • Continuation of the extensive modernisation of our lifts

 

2013

  • Entire housing stock equipped with smoke detectors (approx. 50,000 units).
  • Submission of the design concept for a partial development of Eichplatz
  • Completion of the refurbishment work at Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße 16-24
  • Start of construction of the residential complex "Wohnen an der Tonnenmühle" 
  • Completion of renovation work on the head office at Löbdergaben 19
  • Inauguration of the shared flat for trainees at Erlanger Allee 106
  • Establishment of an outpatient assisted living group with the DRK (German Red Cross) at Ernst-Schneller-Straße 10
  • Architectural competition "Friedensberg Terraces" for 100 new flats
  • Start of our residential area magazine "Leben in der Platte" on JenaTV
  • Start of our thank-you campaign for existing tenants

 

2010

  • 60. edition of our tenant newspaper 
  • Installation of photovoltaics system on an 11-storey residential building for the first time in Germany 
  • Laying of the first stone of the first multi-family passive house in Thuringia
  • Investment of the 600 millionth euro (since 1990) in our properties

 

2009

  • Handing over the keys to the tenants of the renovated low-energy house in Mühltal
  • Completion of the renovation work and ceremonial inauguration of Villa Rosenthal
  • Inauguration of the new Service Centre Lobeda in Matthias-Domaschk-Straße 1
  • Foundation of the "wohnschirm" project for tenants in emergency situations
  • Change of procuration at jenawohnen GmbH: Cornelia Bergner becomes new authorised officer
  • Introduction of the first electronic garbage recording system

 

2008

  • Conclusion of the one-thousandth modernisation agreement at "wohnenplus"
  • Move-in after the refurbishment works at Ernst-Schneller-Straße 1 in Lobeda-Ost
  • 50th anniversary of our company
  • Move-in of the 114 one- and two-room flats at Spitzweidenweg 20 after complete refurbishment

 

2007

  • Maiden trip of the "Family Tram", as a joint project of the Jena Alliance for the Family and the sponsors from the Stadtwerke Jena Group (Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck, Jenaer Nahverkehr, jenawohnen, Jenaer Bädergesellschaft) and KWS Außenwerbung.
  • Opening of our new Service Centre in Blankenhain

 

2006

  • Completion of the housing estate "An der Weidigsmühle" and occupation of the 45 flats and 3 terraced houses with a high standard of furnishings 
  • Takeover of 300 municipal flats in Blankenhain
  • Opening of our service centre "wohnenplus

 

2005

  • Spin-off of wohndienstjena GmbH as a wholly-owned subsidiary of jenawohnen GmbH to look after the properties of third-party owners.
  • Inauguration of the play and leisure area in Ebereschenstraße
  • Completion of the refurbishment of the entire old building stocks

 

2004

  • 1st Arena Overture with "Carmina Burana" in front of 1,500 spectators
  • Redevelopment of Hans-Berger-Strasse 2 and 4 with 72 flats
  • Laying of the foundation stone for the housing estate "An der Weidigsmühle" in Jena-West
  • Start of demolition work at Ebereschenstraße 2-20 with 420 flats
  • Change of name of the "Städtische Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft Jena mbH" to "jenawohnen GmbH".

 

2003

  • Change of managing directors: Stefan Wosche-Graf replaces Günter Mai ab

 

2002

  • Sale of 94 percent of the company shares to Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck, leaving 6 percent of the company in the possession of the city of Jena via Kommunale Immobilien Jena (KIJ).
  • Repayment of the security deposit to our tenants
  • Inauguration of the Lobdepark in Lobeda East
  • Prize for greening of the façade of Unterlauengasse 3

 

2001

  • Construction of the terraced house complex "Am Marstall" with 17 houses in Jena-Ost.
  • The model project "Vital Living" is awarded the Bauherrenpreis (German architecture award)

2000

  • Inauguration of the residential project "Vitales Wohnen" and occupation of 22 freehold flats and 79 rental apartments 

 

1999

  • Start of gutting and demolition of 248 flats at Lindenstraße 7-11 and Kastanienstraße 1-7.
  • Renovation of 509 flats and construction of three underground garages as part of the Expo 2000 project "Quartier 1", investment volume of DM 62 million (period 1994-1999)
  • Start of the model project "Vital Living" at Paul-Schneider-Strasse 2, 4 and 6 with 101 flats
  • Start of the refurbishment programme for old buildings, including Sophienstraße 45 (built 1909) and Mühlengässchen 8 (built 1937)

1998

  • Administration of 15,940 residential and 288 commercial units
  • 40-jähriges Jubiläum der Städtischen Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft Jena mbH
  • Neugestaltung der Fassaden von 13 Objekten

 

1997

  • Fassadenpreis (facade award) of the city of Jena for the refurbishment of the buildings at Grietgasse 9 and Paradiesstraße 2 
  • Termination renovation works at "Tonnenmühle"

 

1994

  • First privatisation of a property (Michael-Häußer-Weg 5-35) under the Act on Old Debt Assistance, sale of rental flats to tenants

  • First issue of our tenant journal 

 

1990

  • Conversion of the "VEB Gebäudewirtschaft" into the "Städtische Wohnungsbau- und Verwaltungsgesellschaft Jena mbH" as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the City of Jena.
  • Definition of the areas of responsibility: Refurbishment and modernisation of the existing housing stock, housing and condominium management, new housing construction, tenant services and residential environment design

 

1988

  • 30. anniversary of VEB Gebäudewirtschaft 
  • Administration of 26,000 residential units in Jena

 

1981

  • First occupancy of the "Jena-Haus" Lobeda-Ost, Erlanger Allee 110/112

 

1972

  • Change of name from "VEB Kommunale Wohnungsverwaltung Jena" to "VEB Gebäudewirtschaft" for the administration, repair, maintenance and housing construction in Jena.
