Our urban pigeon project effectively combines animal welfare with population control. This benefits both the pigeons and us humans.
As birds that originally nested on cliffs, urban pigeons prefer to nest in sheltered locations. In urban environments, pigeons therefore seek out weather-protected spots on residential buildings.
The result: soiled balconies and facades.
In addition to maintaining a clean living environment, treating pigeons in an animal-friendly manner is important to us. That is why we began implementing the City Pigeon Project in Lobeda in 2012.
jenawohnen has set up three managed pigeon houses in Lobeda and supported the installation of three additional pigeon roosts in the city center. You can find more information about the pigeon houses in Jena here: Pigeon Houses - City Pigeon Project Jena.
Pigeon houses are part of an animal-welfare-friendly solution to reduce the number of urban pigeons. In the pigeon houses, the birds are provided with food in a manner appropriate to their species. They can nest there undisturbed. This ensures that urban pigeons settle less frequently on balconies, roofs, or building facades. The surrounding area stays cleaner.
It is important to replace the eggs with fake ones. This prevents the pigeons from continuing to reproduce, thereby regulating the population.
Please support the project by refraining from feeding the animals on your balcony or in public spaces. Any additional food sources encourage them to settle in residential areas. Preventing pigeons from nesting in the wild also plays a significant role in supporting the project. For more information, please see the flyer “Mehr Wissen, mehr Sauberkeit”.
- Do not leave food out in the open on the balcony.
- Pigeons breed year-round. Therefore, balconies should be checked for nesting material at least once a week.
- Immediately remove any nesting material from the balcony or windowsill.
- Once a nesting site has been successfully used, pigeons will often return to it. Up to 14 chicks can hatch each year.
