Our insect hotels in Jena: Gotthard-Neumann-Straße, Bauersfeldstraße and Felsenkellerstraße

Insects play a central role in maintaining ecological balance—as pollinators of plants, as natural pest controllers, and as part of the food chain. However, habitats for many beneficial insect species are increasingly being lost, especially in urban areas. This is where insect hotels come in.

 What are insect hotels?

Insect hotels are artificially created nesting and overwintering aids for a variety of small creatures. They are made of various natural materials such as wood, bamboo, or hollow plant stems and mimic the natural habitats of wild bees, lacewings, beetles, earwigs, and many others. In this way, they provide native insects with protected nesting and overwintering opportunities.

Why are insect hotels so important?

🌱 Creating nesting sites: Many wild bee species lay their brood in narrow cavities—insect hotels provide these ideal conditions.

🌱 Promoting pest control: Some residents feed on harmful insects like aphids, thereby supporting the health of our green spaces.  Preserving biodiversity: By providing habitats for insects, we promote biodiversity right in the heart of the city.

🌱 Ensuring pollination: Wild bees and other pollinators contribute to the reproduction of wild and cultivated plants—which is essential for healthy ecosystems.
