Ideas for the climate: sunny district of Weimar West

With the „Sonnenstadtteil Weimar West“ project, the Klimaschutzstiftung Jena-Thüringen is supporting a climate-friendly and cost-saving future in the Weimar West district.

The initiative emerged from the Weimar West Future Campus and aims to equip the many multi-storey buildings in the district - which are ideally suited to solar energy - with balcony power plants and photovoltaic systems. The aim is not only to actively contribute to climate protection, but also to reduce the financial burden on residents through lower electricity costs.

In a first step, information events will be organized to explain the advantages and possibilities of photovoltaic systems.

In order to achieve a sustainable impact, two solar systems will be purchased to assemble for teaching units and cooperation will be established with the comprehensive school and grammar school in Weimar West.

The long-term goal is for other schools to be able to borrow the solar systems. Through this collaboration, pupils can be actively involved in climate protection and learn in a practical way how renewable energies work and can be used.

The vision: With the successful implementation of this model project, the Weimar West district can not only make a contribution to reducing CO2 emissions, but also serve as a model for other large housing estates in Thuringia and beyond.

The Climate Protection Foundation is supporting the project with 2,550 euros, sending a strong signal for sustainable urban development. Because: with commitment, creativity and the support of the foundation, the sunny district of Weimar West can show how climate protection works right on its doorstep.
